A church boat is a long wooden rowboat that can seat up to 14 rowers. In the old days, church boats were used as a means of going to church in the Finnish lake regions, where churches were often built on islands to protect them from attackers.
As the rowers pull together, the church boat glides on the lake swiftly and smoothly. A guided church boat trip takes you to the biggest lake in Salla: Onkamojärvi. The Russian border divides the lake in two, so you can easily reach the border zone by boat. The lake is particularly breathtaking on beautiful summer nights when the midnight sun is shining.
