Historic beach of Matovaara

Towards the end of the last ice age, the meltwater from the receding glaciers formed glacial lakes. The biggest of these in Eastern Lapland was the glacial lake of Salla, stretching from Posio along the Kemijoki River to Savukoski and, in the east, to the Tenniöjärvi in Russia. The historic beach of the glacial lake of Salla is still visible in Matovaara, where it is located at a height of some 237-240 metres.
